There is a tree where the future home of the Bugesera Project will be that stands out from the rest of the trees on the property. This tree has been there for a long time. The tree is called the hope tree. The tree earned its name because there have been several attempts to remove it. People have tried to remove it by setting it on fire, poisoning it, and even cutting it down. However, it is still standing, alive, and thriving through all of these attempts to destroy it. It stands as a symbol of hope to all who know its story.

Our lives are the same way. It states in Romans 5:3-4 that there is “glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” No matter what we may face in suffering, we keep pushing through, producing perseverance. So when the next wave of events that challenge us comes, we know that we are conquerors in Christ and will overcome. This cycle of overcoming challenges that cause suffering builds our character. When people see what we go through and overcome all the obstacles in our way because of Christ. We become a beacon of hope for them to see that all things are possible with Christ. Our lives then become a legacy of hope to the world. Our lives become a story that gives God all the glory because we could not do it without him. So like Romans says, we then can “boast in the hope of the glory of God.”

Our lives become a testimony of God’s goodness and his glory. Christ made way for us by shedding his blood for us to be overcomers and not succumb to the enemy’s plans to destroy us. Christ’s death allows us to be more than conquerors. Just like the testimony of the hope tree, our lives tell that no matter what weapons come against us, they will not prosper or fulfill their mission to hurt or destroy us. We will prevail no matter what comes our way because Christ is by our side all the way, and he provides a way to have an abundant and fruitful life.

To this day, the Hope Tree is still standing and will continue to stand as a symbol of hope to all who visit the Bugesera Project.
